Transport group revives jeepney fare hike petition

Transportation is a means of travel from one place to another. We consider this as part of our lives. We can use a taxi, bus, tricycle, car, motor or even jeepney to transport. Those who work use it to go to their respective offices, and I, as a student, I use it to go to school. Nowadays, since the population of our country become bigger, we can see a lot of jeepney in the street.

This afternoon, I’ve read an article written by Zen Hernandez from ABS-CBN News. “Transport group revives jeepney fare hike petition” was the title of it. My face frowns a little as first impression then expecting of a higher expense every day. What if the fare rises? What will be its effect on the economy? On the society? On me?

According to the article, Efren de Luna, head of ACTO (Transport Group), said that it is time for the basic jeepney fares increase to P10 since the price of the oil is increasing. This would cost an additional expense on the part of us as a consumer. For example, in my situation, my minimum amount of fare for every day is P40 back and forth, if it will increase P2 for the first 5 kilometer, then my expenditures will be added by P4 each day. P4 is a big thing and the amount of my savings may decrease. This issue may also cost a benefit for the firm (jeepney drivers). They would gain a sufficient or increasing amount of profit. In the Law of demand, if the price goes up then the demand goes down, but in the case of an oil, the number of demand might fall but in a very small number. It is because oil is a basic good that everyone uses. Just like jeepney, which consumer prefer because of its cheaper amount of fare, might affect just a little to its quantity demand. We may think that it is unjust to increase the fare in that kind of amount, but if we look in their part, their wage is decreasing due to the increasing price of oil. In the short run, people may still use jeepney as their means of transportation because we have no control of the increasing price of oil that leads to increase of fare, but if time goes by we can have solutions as to decrease our expenditures.

I, as student, may have a higher cost every day if the fare rises. Since I am still a student, I use the money that my parents give for my daily expenses. If the price of fare increases, my cost will increase and therefore I will take larger amount of money out. Of course, the marginal cost is higher than its marginal benefit. This will make me think of finding a way to get additional money or lower my expenses every day.

Even it is still a petition and not yet been declare, I am hoping for a fair judgment and decision from the government.
